Jaws-opening sequence analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8SnZmUjhAA

The opening sequence is set in early morning or night. The scene starts off with a group of young people having a beach party. In the opening of Jaws the most of the scene is shot from the sharks view. This gives the audience the idea that she is not safe and it also shows which direction the danger is coming from. The editing when the two people running to the sea and when the girl is being hurt is shown in quick fast paced whereas in contrast to the calm, still shots of the boy sleeping on the beach.
Soundtrack in jaws helps to build the tension and fear. The music is very quiet and slow at the start and slowly it increases in pace when something bad about to happen. At the start of the film the screen is black. This helps to carp audience attention as black is a dark colour and it connected with danger. Start of the movie is quiet and then the in the middle part he tension parts happens, this is where the music becomes slowly louder and louder until the ending becomes silent again. The silence at the end shows death. The screaming and splashing when the girl is getting attracted is completely different to the boy sleeping on the sand. We as audience expect him to rescue her as she is screaming and making lot of noise but the shark successfully kill the girl.

Editing is used to help the scene flow from one to another. There are cross cut between the lady being killed and the man is drunk on the beach. This makes the audience have a little hope that maybe the boy will rescue the girl. Early night shot is dissolved to late shot. This is done to show pass of time. This is call compares of time.

Lots of close up shots are used this is because it helps the audience to establish the surrounding and characters.  The most effective shot in the opening scene is the worm eye view which is shown as from the shark point of view. At the start the camera pans along the characters, this establishes the scene between the characters.

The characters are shown around a fire situated on the beach. They are drinking and smoking. The way the characters are acting we can tell they are young and carefree. Most often in a thriller we expect these kinds of teenagers to be targeted victims and happen to be dying one by one. Audience can tell there is something violence going to happen especially when the girl and boy running away from the group.

Legally Blonde - opening sequence analysis

The main title in “Legally Blonde” is positioned in the middle of the picture in pink and white font to make it stand out against the background and to give us an idea of what the film is going to be like.  The title is written in a font that looks as it has been written by hand which suggest that the film isn’t going to be very serious and it’s going to be an easy watch. The pink lettering in the opening credits and cursive writing affect the female stereotype of 'pink'. When the title begins to be written the image behind becomes more in focus so by the time the title is fully written the image behind it is also clear so everything becomes clearer now we know the title and what the film is going to be about.
We know a lot about the main character by the end of the sequence. Throughout we see her getting ready but her identity is built up and kept from the viewer until the card reaches her room, as she is the most important character.  We are given lots of clues about what she looks like, what type of person she is and what she like.  We can tell from the clues that she is a girly girl who cares lot about what she looks like, we can also see that she is popular, from the homecoming queen banner, likes designer bags, from her Tiffany necklace and Prada shopping bag, and also is caring and thoughtful as she has a dog which looks well kept and is dressed up in matching clothes to her. We only see her face when the music is finished and when the letter is finally passed to her and we find out she is Elle.
The first few camera shots are of the girl pampering herself which only adds to our first stereotype. Stereotypes are shown clearly in this opening sequence and overall in the film in general. This film aims to confront the stereotype and tries to put end to any sexism and stereotypes.
Not many things are given away in the opening scene, this is because they want to keep the audience wanting to know what’s happening but the clue about the plot is from the card we follow through the scene. This is an example of an enigma code in the opening scene as we are questioning what the card is for and why Elle is is getting it. This keeps the audience hooked as they want to know what the card is for and whether it is going to be a large part of the movie.

Inception - opening sequence analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VXkUzf1et4

The first part of the film is so confusing that it makes the viewer ask so many questions and then stick to want to carry on watching the film. The film starts with spectacular, strong base music which helps to build up tension and confusion to the viewers. It begins with a man dressed in casual clothing being washed up on the beach. The man then see’s two children and this is shown in a special effect to make the children look like a dream or a vision.  The character that was washed up on the beach is taken to a very rich building. In the building we see people that are dressed smarter then himself.   Mise En Scene is used to show the setting as very unique and important. From this scene the audience is able to that the people inside are very rich and has a fancy life style. This is creates contrast with the person who was washed up onto the beach.  The audience will have many questions by this time as they wanting to know why he is washed up on the beach and what the story line will be including the setting. To start the scene a close up is used to show his facial expression. Jump cut is used to switch to the mysterious building.  From the close up we can see that the main character is confused and nervures as well as sorrow.  Another jump cut is used now but this time the man who was washed up on the beach is now dressed smart and formally like the people in the building. This creates a mysteries feeling to the audience but this helps the audience to continue watching the movie to find out what just happened to make the man change.  Camera was been moved from characters to characters to ensure the audience that they are the main characters of the film and they will be playing an important role. The sound for attention to details is really good for example the focus on the sound of the wave crashing against the rock on the beach. Opening scene is effective because it uses a Varity of Editing, Mise En Scene, Camera shots and sounds to create introduction mystery. If I had to sum up the opening scene in tow words then I will say it’s full of chaos and suspense.
